U.S. Administration Supports Trump’s Call for Energy Truce Amid Russia’s Silence

WASHINGTON, DC / EuroWire / – U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement to cease hostilities targeting each other’s energy infrastructure. The President revealed this arrangement on Sunday, stating that it would take effect immediately. He characterized it as an “energy ceasefire” but did not provide specific details. By Monday, there was no public statement from Russia confirming the deal. Ukraine expressed support for a reciprocal suspension of attacks and indicated it was seeking additional clarification from Washington.

Ukraine backs Trump energy truce as Russia stays silent
Kyiv says it supports an energy ceasefire if Moscow follows the same restrictions.

Trump shared details of the accord via his Truth Social platform and urged both nations to adhere to it. The White House had not issued a separate document outlining which sites would be protected. No monitoring or enforcement mechanisms had been publicly announced. The Kremlin also had not offered its own confirmation of the ceasefire, leaving essential details unresolved as officials discussed the scope and application of the proposed halt on energy facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Kyiv was ready to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure under reciprocal conditions. While welcoming Trump’s announcement, he emphasized that the agreement needed to be implemented in practice. Zelenskyy also expressed hope that Russia would uphold similar restrictions. He added that Ukrainian officials were awaiting clearer guidance from the United States. Following the announcement, Kyiv continued discussions with U.S. officials and European partners.

Ukraine reports ongoing assaults on energy infrastructure

After Trump declared the energy ceasefire, Zelenskyy noted that Russian forces persisted in attacking Ukrainian targets. He highlighted an incident at the CHP-5 combined heat and power plant in Kharkiv. Ukrainian authorities confirmed the strike occurred after the President’s announcement. Zelenskyy also reported continued drone and glide bomb operations across Ukraine. His office stated that over 200 attacks on electricity generation and transmission sites had taken place in the preceding week.

Additionally, Ukraine documented 17 strikes on gas and oil facilities within the same timeframe. Earlier on Sunday, Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine would cease targeting Russian refineries if Moscow halted its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Trump had previously urged Kyiv to stop striking Russian oil facilities before announcing this latest arrangement. The ceasefire statement followed his disclosure of a separate U.S.-Russia diesel supply agreement on Friday. During this period, global fuel markets remained elevated.

Russia has yet to publicly endorse the agreement

In September, Trump made a similar announcement claiming Russia and Ukraine had agreed to cease attacks on energy infrastructure. However, neither government officially confirmed that earlier deal, and attacks continued afterward. The current proposal again pertains specifically to energy facilities rather than all military operations. Both Russia and Ukraine have persisted in using drones and missiles during the conflict, including targeting energy assets in their long-range strike campaigns.

As of Monday, Moscow had not officially confirmed the new energy ceasefire or specified which facilities it considered protected. Ukraine stated it accepted the concept of a mutual halt and had issued instructions following Trump’s remarks. Zelenskyy expressed expectations that Russia would observe the same restrictions. No joint verification system, enforcement mechanism, or fixed timeframe had been established publicly, leaving the ceasefire dependent on further confirmation and implementation by the involved governments.
