BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has approved a €2.3 million emergency humanitarian package aimed at combating cholera in four African nations. Assistance will be extended to Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. The funds will enhance treatment services, bolster disease monitoring, improve access to safe water, and upgrade sanitation infrastructure. Authorities across West and Central Africa continue to grapple with recurrent outbreaks. Nigeria has experienced the most significant surge among these countries, with Borno State at the epicenter of its outbreak.

EU channels €2.3 million into Africa cholera response
Cholera response funding targets treatment, clean water, sanitation and disease surveillance.

Nigeria will benefit from €1.5 million of the emergency aid. This funding will facilitate the deployment of response teams and the procurement of cholera treatment supplies. It will also support the purification of water at public sites and within households. Additionally, the allocation will enable health workers to strengthen surveillance efforts in hard-to-reach communities. Other components include case management, public awareness campaigns, and community outreach initiatives. The main goal is to curb transmission and improve access to treatment in regions with high infection rates.

Data from regional health authorities highlight a significant increase in cholera cases reported during 2026. The World Health Organization documented 90,049 cases across 18 nations in its African Region through June 28. The same period saw 1,528 deaths reported. Nigeria accounted for 26,848 cases and 181 fatalities, with 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths in June alone. Borno State represented over 95% of Nigeria’s total cases, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected areas.

Emergency funding boosts outbreak mitigation efforts

The Central African Republic is set to receive €500,000 from the emergency aid package. These funds will be directed toward patient treatment, vaccination campaigns, sanitation initiatives, and access to clean water. Support will also be allocated to enhance disease detection, community engagement, and safe burial practices where necessary. As of June 28, health data indicated 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country. The additional resources will empower local response teams to swiftly identify cases and maintain treatment services during the ongoing outbreak.

Cameroon will receive €100,000 to reinforce response efforts in affected communities. The funds will cover extra personnel, medicines, treatment facilities, and oral rehydration points. By June 28, authorities reported 108 cases and six deaths. Chad’s allocation of €200,000 will focus on sanitation, water access, community surveillance, and patient care. During the same period, Chad recorded 109 cases and three deaths. The total of these four national allocations comprises the entire €2.3 million emergency package.

Nigeria experiences notable spike in June cases

Across the African continent, a total of 27,954 new cholera cases were documented in 12 countries during June, marking a 95% increase from May. The region also recorded 284 deaths linked to cholera during that month. Nigeria reported the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. The surge within Nigeria was primarily concentrated in Borno State. Contributing factors include ongoing conflict, displacement, inadequate sanitation, and seasonal rainfall, all intensifying public health challenges in affected communities.

Cholera, which results in severe diarrhea after ingestion of contaminated food or water with Vibrio cholerae bacteria, can cause rapid dehydration if not treated promptly. The EU aid aims to address immediate needs within the four recipient nations. Funding will support treatment capacities, disease surveillance, vaccination efforts where applicable, improvements in sanitation, and safer water supplies. It also emphasizes direct community involvement in affected areas. The €2.3 million aid package provides essential emergency resources to bolster national and humanitarian responses to the ongoing regional cholera outbreak.
