On May 28, Iceland’s parliament approved holding a referendum after the government introduced the proposal earlier in 2026. Results from the six constituencies across Iceland, published by the National Electoral Commission, revealed significant regional differences, particularly between the capital area and other regions.
Regional Voting Patterns Highlight Division
In the capital’s two constituencies, support for renewed negotiations was evident, with Reykjavík North registering 57.5% support for Yes and Reykjavík South at 54.5%. Opposition was most pronounced in the Northwest constituency, where 62.9% voted No. The Northeast constituency recorded 61.2% against restarting talks, while the South constituency showed 60.5% voting No. These regional results collectively resulted in a national majority favoring the continuation of Iceland’s European Union accession negotiations being rejected.
Despite this outcome, Iceland remains closely tied to European institutions even though it is not an EU member. Since 1994, the country has participated in the European Economic Area and is a member of the European Free Trade Association. Iceland also takes part in the Schengen Area, enabling passport-free travel across much of Europe.
