WindEurope forecasts a historic surge in wind capacity growth for Europe in 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is projected to experience a record-breaking year in wind energy deployment after installing 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity during the first half of 2026, representing a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. Data from Wind Europe reveals that these newly activated turbines produce enough electricity to supply roughly 7 million households across Europe, while also replacing fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. The continent’s wind power expansion is accelerating as high activity in the summer months fuels broader energy transition efforts.

Europe on track for record year in wind power with 8.8 GW added
Industrial wind farm installations operate across green agricultural fields in rural Europe.

Germany led regional growth in the first half of 2026, contributing 3.4 GW, approximately 40% of all new wind capacity across Europe. Over 500 individual turbines were brought online in Germany, including 423 onshore and 84 offshore units. Other countries like Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France also reported notable capacity increases. Ukraine notably added over 400 MW of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflict, while Belgium introduced an additional 60 MW into its grid.

Forecasts published in WindEurope’s Autumn Report suggest that by the end of 2026, European wind capacity will total 24 GW, setting a new record for yearly installations. This growth phase is expected to serve as a key milestone toward a broader industrial target of 30 GW annually in the 2030s. Investment in new European wind farms reached 9 billion euros in the first half of 2026, with national governments allocating over 17 GW of capacity through competitive auctions. An additional 26 GW are scheduled for tendering before the year’s end.

Europe Nears Record Year in Wind Power Installations

Despite these impressive installation figures, industry representatives have issued warnings about ongoing structural bottlenecks that could threaten long-term growth. While Germany accelerated deployment by granting permits for over 9 GW of onshore wind in the first half of 2026, permit volumes declined elsewhere, including in Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Industry leaders highlight that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could impede future project timelines, even as wind power expansion continues.

In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope Chief Executive Officer Tinne Van der Straeten emphasized that while 2026 could set an all-time record for wind installations, the momentum must be maintained carefully. She pointed out that decisions made by governments regarding permitting processes, auction structures, grid infrastructure development, and industrial electrification in the upcoming months will be crucial to sustaining the sector’s current pace of growth.

Trade Group Outlines Five Key Policy Priorities for EU Leaders

To uphold current growth levels, WindEurope has identified five strategic policy focuses for the European Union and individual nations. These include streamlining permitting procedures and expanding regional transmission networks. The organization also advocates for channeling revenue from the Emissions Trading System into industrial electrification initiatives and establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under existing scenarios, Europe’s wind capacity is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, supplying about 27% of the EU’s electricity demand.

Officials from national ministries and European energy regulators are anticipated to review these recommendations during upcoming ministerial meetings ahead of winter. Ongoing monitoring of turbine installations and auction results will be maintained through official trade portals to ensure compliance with the EU’s decarbonization objectives.
