London / EuroWire / – A joint scientific investigation highlights how human-induced global warming is directly responsible for the severe arid conditions gripping Europe, providing clear evidence of climate change intensifying droughts across the continent. Researchers from multiple countries concluded that rising temperatures are the primary factor behind the deeply dried environment, surpassing the impacts of mere reductions in rainfall. After a record-breaking heatwave in June, the region is now battling aggressive wildfires, strict water restrictions, and shrinking waterways. The study shows that the increased temperatures cause rapid moisture loss from soils and water bodies, significantly heightening the risk of extreme dryness. While spring rainfall fell below historical averages, the heat generated by climate change intensified the overall severity of the drought.

The World Weather Attribution group released the study illustrating how higher temperatures are actively depleting natural water sources. Imperial College London researcher Mariam Zachariah pointed out that the drought is not mainly due to low rainfall but rather a warmer atmosphere that causes greater moisture deficits on land. This means the danger of drought continues to grow even in areas where rainfall patterns have not changed significantly. Scientists explain that for each one-degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor. This increased capacity directly results in more evaporation from soil and vegetation across the landscape.
Utilizing extensive meteorological data and sophisticated computer models, researchers compared the current hotter climate to a scenario where global temperatures were 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their analysis found that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to be extremely dry than in a hypothetical world without human-made warming. In eastern Europe, these same soil moisture shortages have become 11 times more probable. The study also revealed that the likelihood of extremely high evaporative demand between April and June in western Europe has increased by approximately 80 times. As a result, rainfall deficits that once would not have caused severe drought are now leading to much drier soils.
Warming and the Atmosphere’s Growing Thirst
Dominik Schumacher, a scientist from ETH Zurich, emphasized that the tendency for soils to dry out excessively already begins in spring before summer’s arrival. He explained that rising temperatures cause the atmosphere’s thirst to accelerate rapidly, drawing moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils. The combination of an early, relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created conditions highly conducive to large wildfires. This rapid soil drying prepared the terrain for ignition, resulting in severe fires across several countries. The study confirms that climate change-driven drought in Europe is shifting traditional weather patterns into more dangerous, persistent cycles.
The agricultural sector is experiencing unparalleled stress due to the widespread loss of vital soil moisture. The ongoing drought is exerting immense pressure on farmers, leading to historic crop losses across borders. France, for instance, is projected to record its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, marking a significant disruption in regional food supply. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further endangering the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortfalls, combined with ongoing global conflicts, risk pushing food prices higher and disproportionately impacting low-income communities.
Increased Water Vapor Capacity as Temperatures Rise
The hydrological consequences are aggravating the economic damages, with unusually low river levels disrupting crucial cargo transit networks. Major shipping disruptions on key waterways reflect the growing severity of the continent’s water scarcity crisis. Reduced river flows threaten energy production, especially in regions relying heavily on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that June was the hottest on record for western Europe. Many countries have already enacted emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve dwindling supplies.
Experts warn that if current global temperature trends persist, drought conditions could become even more frequent. They stress that these intense evaporative conditions are already happening at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate danger posed by ongoing emissions. Should temperatures rise to 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative extremes could double. Without swift and decisive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, specialists warn Europe is headed toward a future marked by relentlessly hot and dry summers.
